THE READING NOOK TIMES

A COZY CORNER FOR MEDIA REVIEWS

"updated frequently," says professional procrastinator

Welcome to a little bit of the internet that I've carved out for myself.

A simple place for me to dump my thoughts on various forms of media. I have a bad memory and I like the idea of coming back to things I've seen and read to see how my views of it has changed.

Plus, I like to share what I may have got out of something. I hope you get something out of any of the things I write in here.

Book reviews

there's no secret that I love reading, and talking about things I read.

I wish I could say I've enjoyed reading my entire life. While I read things like Readers Digest non-ficiton books about space or dinosaurs and articles in kids magazines like Disney Adventures and K-Zone, reading was utilitarian and I wouldn't say I had a love for it. It wasn't until high school before I found out how fun reading was.

By then I got into reading anything I could get my hands on. You will find on the rest of this page a recurring theme: I'm genre agnostic. While there are certainly genres I like, I'm not adverse to reading outside of my comfort. That said, I tend to read more speculative fiction. I like fantasy, both old and new. I like science fiction, particularly pulp sci-fi. And I love horror, especially if that horror has a healthy dose of history or religion.

Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman is probably my favourite novel, though it's hard to choose just one.

I'm not adverse to reading outside of my comfort.

While I hope to write something insightful, some of the reviews might simply be what I like and didn't like about a particular work.

MUSIC reviews

technological regression makes a fair point when you try to listen to more than an hour of music via streaming. I abosolutely hate the algorithm and I love my physical media. I love my vinyl, cassetttes, and CDs. All of which have been digitally ripped onto an MP3 player.

I find plenty of music rummaging through second hand stores and scouring bandcamp. I want to bring some eyes onto smaller artists who I like.

Like the pull quote earlier, I like to listen to whatever. Though my tastes tend to lean more towards electronica and pop-punk.

You might not like these reviews if you're looking for something that breaks it down in music talk. I have no music talent, and so the reviews will probably be short and to the point: I like this and maybe a little about the artist.

What about everything else?

the remainder of what I want to write will be dumped here.

TV show and movies, of which I seem to have even less time in the day to watch. My favourite movies, to name a few: Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Master and Commander, Blade Runner, The Love Witch. That should give you an idea of the type of things I like to watch.

Video games are another thing I'll probably throw in here, but I don't have a lot of indie picks. If you're into retro games, there might be something that you like in here. There isn't really any games I could mark as "best" since plenty of games can merit that, and it depends on what I feel like at the time of making that list.

As mentioned previously, I hope there's something you get out of anything you read here.
